The Sidney Prize

The Sidney Prize recognises outstanding achievement in filmmaking with a cash prize of $10,000. Presented at the Sydney Film Festival, this is awarded to the most audacious and cutting-edge work in the Official Competition line-up. The winner is selected by a panel of industry professionals. This year’s award is for the 2023 short film ‘The Mother of All Lies’ directed by Asmae El Moudir.

The prize was named in honour of Sidney Hook, a distinguished American philosopher and Phi Beta Kappa member. Hook was known for his scholarly work in the history of ideas, his undergraduate teaching, and his leadership in advancing the cause of liberal arts education.

Established by a donation from the late Mrs. Sidney M. Edelstein and in memory of her husband, the prize is awarded to a graduate student who has shown promise in research in the history of technology, particularly through a master’s thesis. The prize is intended to encourage research in the subject and to encourage students who may not otherwise be able to pursue graduate studies.

It is hoped that, by the offering of this scholarship, some remembrance can be preserved of the generative influence which Sidney Cox exercised on hundreds of Dartmouth students both in his classes and in his writing. The Committee governing this scholarship has stipulated that any kind of undergraduate writing in English may be submitted for its consideration and that any one of its members (not necessarily the judge who shall receive the manuscripts) will have the privilege of judging them.

Awarded annually to the student who obtains the highest mark in 12 junior units of the Department of History, Celtic Studies & Jewish Civilisation, provided that the work is of sufficient merit. The scholarship is funded by the Aisling Society of Sydney.

The Scholarship was established in 2007 by the NSW Government to help support a student with financial need who is studying for a Masters in Film and Television Production at the University of Sydney. The Scholarship will be a valued incentive to students, providing the opportunity to undertake additional study and achieve their career goals.

This is a monetary award to assist with the costs of tuition and the preparation of a creative portfolio for the Master of Moving Image program. The Scholarship was made possible by the generous contribution of Sydney film production company, Sydney Films Pty Ltd.

This is an annual prize offered by the Project on Private Law to recognise an exceptional paper written by a law student in a course or seminar or as an independent research project on a topic of private law. The prize is supported by the firm of Roberts & Holland LLP. This is a monetary prize in the amount of $5,000. The winning paper will be published in the Journal of Private Law. In addition, the winner will be invited to make a presentation on his or her work at a meeting of the Project on Private Law in the spring of each year.
