The Singapore Prize is a biennial award of S$50,000 to a work that contributes significantly to our understanding of Singapore’s history and society. The Prize is a result of a joint collaboration between NUS’ Asia Research Institute and the Government of Singapore, with Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow at the Institute, serving as its current jury chair.
It was mooted by Kishore Mahbubani, a renowned historian and professor of Singapore studies at the NUS, in 2014 to celebrate SG50, with the aim of fostering a shared imagination about the past amongst all people of Singapore and Asia. This is in keeping with the ideas of the eminent American social scientist Benedict Anderson, who wrote that nations are a “shared imagination”, and that history is a critical glue binding societies today.
To qualify for the prize, students must be nominated by their teachers and submit up to three artworks before the submission deadline. The winners will be announced in Oct. 2021.
The sgp prize winner will receive a cheque of S$50,000 from the Singapore government, together with a certificate of recognition. In addition, they will be invited to attend the award ceremony in Singapore and have the opportunity to meet the other finalists and their families. The finalists are from six continents, and their projects range from a scheme to plant, grow and digitally track trees in Liberia to a less carbon-intensive way of treating industrial waste. The project that wins the sgp prize will be announced at a gala dinner in October 2021. The inaugural prize was won by a team of researchers led by Dr. Lee Xueyong, an associate professor at the University of Hong Kong and author of The Chinese in Indonesia: Economic, Cultural, and Political Interaction. They investigated the relationship between immigrants from China and their adopted countries. The work has provided new insight into the influence of globalization on Asian cultures. The work also contributed to an improved understanding of the role of migrant communities in Indonesia and their impact on local politics and economies. It also helped to bridge the gap between Chinese and non-Chinese scholars’ perceptions of the impact of globalization in Indonesia.
